“Magic Poopies,” god mode, signing receipts with your fingernail, profanities in advertising and MUCH, MUCH more.
Welcome to our section on Israeli Culture…

In the American military, it is illegal for any commander to hit his soldiers. Israel is quite the opposite. A punch from a commander in the IDF is considered an honor. It is either a sign of respect from the commander or it is accompanied by a gift from the commander. Either way, the soldier receiving the punch is generally smiling, despite the pain (as you may have read in Adam’s most recent post).

Double whammy today. First off, more brilliance in advertising:
And second, this is a store we saw in Jerusalem. Not behind the pile, not next to the pile, but rather the pile itself:

In Israel, almost everything is written in English as well as in Hebrew, mostly to help foreigners. Inevitably, things get misspelled and mistranslated. Here are two examples from our recent trip to Jerusalem.
For all of you non-Hebrew speakers, the word רימון (Rimon) means both grenade and pomegranate.
Seems like Google Translate gave them the wrong meaning.

On the way to meet our landlord to sign the lease, we got stuck in some traffic. A lady in the other lane, who was also stuck in traffic, began to honk. Our cab driver calmly rolled down his window and yelled (in Hebrew, obviously), “You’re an idiot!” The two of them then proceeded to have a two-minute, polite (relatively) conversation as to why or why not the female driver was an idiot.

We’ve gotten a few questions as to what “god mode” and “magic poopies” are. We figured we’d add that portion in when we didn’t have other cultural aspects to write about. Please keep in mind that a) we’ve been hanging out with a lot of 17-19 year old males at our training program and b) we’re simply passing on the information, not creating it.
So magic poopies and god mode both fall into the category of Israeli Shit Culture (Yes, literally shit).
– Magic Poopies (קקי קסם or Kaki Kesem) is when you don’t need to wipe after taking a shit. This is known in the US as a ghost.
– God Mode is when, while taking a crap, the poop extends all the way from the point of exodus to the water, ensuring that there is no splash upon release.

Walking around the Dizengoff Center Mall yesterday, we walked by this genius piece of fashion advice. Advertising guidelines around here are… lax. For that matter, the “F bomb” and a handful of other colorful American swear-words seem to be staples of daily conversation (appropriate only from ages 4 and up).

Yesterday, when our waitress brought us our check at the end of lunch, she forgot to bring a pen. She then said, “Just make an X with your fingernail.” Yon and I both looked at her like she was crazy. She picked up on our hesitation, simply shrugged and said, “It’s Israel. Everything’s allowed.”
